Series background & context
The Kate Daniels series drops you into a future Atlanta where waves of wild magic roll over failing technology, turning everyday life into a cycle of blackouts, ruined infrastructure, and sudden monsters. In the middle of that mess walks Kate, a mercenary with a sword she loves too much and secrets she refuses to share.
Kate makes a living taking dangerous jobs no one else wants, dealing with everything from rogue mages to hungry undead. On the surface she is blunt, sarcastic, and very comfortable solving problems with steel. Underneath she is hiding the truth about the power in her blood and the terrifying father who would like to claim her.
Across the main novels, readers follow Kate as she builds a reluctant alliance with the shapeshifters of the Pack, led by Curran, the Beast Lord, and with the necromancers who steer vampires for a mysterious organization called the People. Jobs that start as routine investigations often spiral into conflicts with ancient gods, forgotten magic, and mythological beings pulled from Slavic, Celtic, Middle Eastern, and other traditions.
What starts as a lone-wolf mercenary story gradually turns into something wider. Kate gathers friends, apprentices, and allies. Her connection with Curran grows from professional irritation into a slow-burn partnership that has to survive politics, war, and the demands of leadership. Found family is a core thread, whether it is Kate taking in an orphaned street kid or risking everything for the Pack she never meant to join.
The tone mixes sharp banter and big, cinematic fight scenes with moments of real vulnerability. One chapter might feature a brawl with a mythic monster; the next might show Kate navigating messy pack dinner conversations, or bargaining with a god in a half-empty office building. The series also pays attention to the cost of constant crisis, both physical and emotional.
Beyond the ten primary novels, the Kate Daniels world includes novellas and spin-offs that follow supporting characters, giving glimpses of the same shifting Atlanta from new angles. Together they paint a layered picture of a world that keeps trying to fall apart, and a woman who keeps choosing to stand between that world and the people she cares about.
