The Inheritance

by Ilona Andrews

2025

Talent assessor Adaline “Ada” Moore enters a dimensional breach expecting a routine survey and instead is trapped alone with monstrous predators and a terrified tracking dog. A dying alien’s gift fuses with her, awakening strange powers and forcing her to fight her way home on her own terms.

Series background & context

Breach Wars is a newer science fantasy series that blends interdimensional invasion, military fantasy, and a story structure inspired by LitRPG. It takes place in a world where Earth has been attacked through “breaches,” unstable gateways that open into alien landscapes filled with monsters and rare resources.

The invasions were catastrophic, but they also awakened latent magical Talents in some humans. Governments and guilds now rely on these Talents to enter breaches, fight hostile creatures, and bring back the metals and medicines that can keep humanity in the fight. Every expedition balances national need, personal risk, and the lure of enormous paydays.

The first book, The Inheritance, follows Adaline “Ada” Moore, a middle‑aged mother and Talent whose job is to assess new breaches for her guild. She is experienced, pragmatic, and painfully aware that each mission might be her last, but the money pays for her children’s future. When a routine survey goes wrong, Ada is trapped inside a hostile breach with only a tracking dog and her wits for company.

What happens next reshapes her life. A dying alien warrior gifts Ada a mysterious gem that fuses with her, unlocking ancestral memories and new abilities linked to an ancient interdimensional legacy. Surviving the breach becomes less about finishing a job and more about understanding what she has become, who betrayed her, and how to get home without losing herself.

The Breach Wars stories emphasize problem‑solving and endurance over easy power fantasies. Ada is not a fresh‑faced recruit; she is a professional who knows exactly how bad things can get. Battles are dangerous, resources are limited, and victories often come with scars. At the same time, there is a quiet hopefulness in watching her claim agency in a system that has treated her as expendable.

Readers who enjoy game‑like structures, detailed worldbuilding, and a heroine whose competence comes from years of hard experience will find a lot to love here, even before the promised sequels widen the scope of the war.
