Author bio
Heather Killough Walden was born in California and is now based in Texas, where she has lived with her husband and child. Her books sit mostly in paranormal romance, but they move freely through fantasy, urban fantasy, and the occasional science fiction turn. Her background in religious studies, archaeology, and law shows up all over the place, especially in the way her stories mix ancient myth, modern life, and big supernatural rules.
She started early.
Walden has said she learned to read very young, and writing followed right behind it. One of her clearest origin stories goes back to when she was five and desperate for somewhere to put her thoughts, which led to her first journal. She has also said that writing became a natural way to communicate because speaking off the cuff never came as easily.
That private habit turned into a long apprenticeship. For years she tried the traditional route, sending out query letters and collecting rejection slips. Instead of waiting forever for a gate to open, she began posting work online on free fiction sites, where readers found it, shared it, and kept coming back.
Then Kindle changed the shape of things.
Walden self-published one of her novels at a low price, it hit the top of the vampire romance charts, and an agent reached out to her. Not long after that, her career expanded into print, with Avenger's Angel helping introduce her Lost Angels books to a wider audience. Her Big Bad Wolf novels and the October Trilogy also pushed her onto major bestseller lists, which is a very twenty-first-century publishing story if there ever was one.
Readers usually come to her for big-feeling paranormal romance, but the appeal is broader than one lane. The Heat and The Vampire King are packed with possessive heroes, fated mates, and a shared supernatural world that keeps getting larger. Avenger's Angel leans into archangels, prophecy, and cosmic stakes. Forever Neverland shows her softer, more wistful side, using a Peter Pan retelling to ask what happens after the adventure is supposed to be over. And A Different Model proves she can slide into synthetic minds and futuristic danger without losing the emotional pull.
Her stories tend to circle the same pleasures in new forms. Lonely rulers. Dangerous protectors. Women who discover they are far more powerful than they knew. Hidden worlds pressing up against everyday life. There is usually a strong thread of fate, but also a lot of choice, and her books like to test what love costs when power, immortality, or old grudges get in the way.
She still sounds like somebody who loves the act of writing itself. Walden has described starting books by hand in a journal before the work moves anywhere else, which feels right for an author whose career began with a child asking for a notebook. She has traveled widely, still has a soft spot for hockey, and has joked that she would not mind ending up in a town with a world-class team. For now, Texas is home, and the supernatural worlds keep coming.
