Series background & context

The Kings grows out of the werewolf world in The Big Bad Wolf, but it quickly becomes something much larger. This is the big canvas series, the one where Walden takes the idea of fated mates and stretches it across thirteen supernatural realms ruled by thirteen solitary kings.

The core setup is strong and easy to latch onto. A high witch sees a vision of a chessboard holding not just the usual thirteen kings, but thirteen queens as well. That prophecy kicks everything into motion. For ages, these rulers have governed alone, each from his own lonely throne. Now fate is moving, queens are appearing, and the balance of the realms is starting to shift.

From there, each book introduces a different king and the woman meant for him.

Roman D'Angelo in The Vampire King brings the series in through vampire royalty and modern heroine Evie Farrow. The Phantom King widens the world through Siobhan and Thanatos. The Warlock King and The Goblin King keep building the pattern, pairing supernatural rulers with women whose power, courage, or hidden identities make them central to the fight ahead. Later books take readers into fae courts, shadow realms, ice kingdoms, demonic territories, shifter politics, nightmare spaces, dragon history, and even the strange architecture of time itself.

That variety is the fun of the series. Each book has its own couple and mood, but the ongoing story never disappears. Enemies keep circling, old prophecies keep unfolding, and the cast grows into a true ensemble. Characters from earlier books reappear, relationships echo across the larger world, and the sense of an approaching supernatural war gives the romances extra weight.

It is sprawling on purpose.

If you like Walden at her most maximalist, this is probably the shelf you want. The tone is intense, sexy, dramatic, and full of mythic scale, but it still hangs on the personal stuff, lonely kings, wary women, and the messy business of learning to trust someone when fate has already made the introduction. Reading in order helps a lot, because the emotional payoffs and the world politics build on one another.

Think of The Kings as paranormal romance crossed with an ever-expanding supernatural royal family saga. Once it gets its claws in, it does not think small.
