Series background & context

Jody Hedlund's Hearts of Faith books are historical romances inspired by real love stories from the past. Rather than following one cast from book to book, the series works more like a collection of standalones linked by a shared interest in faith, hardship, and the women who stood beside well-known men.

That gives the series a nice range. The Preacher's Bride moves into Puritan England and the dangerous world around a widowed preacher. The Doctor's Lady heads west on a mission journey built around a marriage in name only. Rebellious Heart shifts to colonial Massachusetts, where class expectations, education, and public duty shape a smart young woman's future.

The women are the center of these books.

Hedlund tends to write heroines who are practical, outspoken, and deeply compassionate. They are often thrown into situations where doing the right thing comes at a real cost. The men they love are not just romantic interests either. They are preachers, doctors, lawyers, reformers, and strivers, men pulled by work that feels bigger than themselves.

What ties the collection together is the tension between private love and public pressure. Enemies, illness, politics, rigid social rules, and dangerous journeys all have a way of showing up. So do quiet questions about calling, courage, and whether two people can build a life together when the world keeps demanding something else from them.

These are love stories with mud on their hems and trouble at the door.

If you want a Jody Hedlund starting place that shows her interest in real history, spiritual conviction, and emotionally intense romance, this is a strong one. The books can be read in any order, but taken together they give a clear sense of what she does best.
