Orphan Train Books in Order

The Orphan Train series follows the Neumann sisters through the crowded streets of 1850s New York and out into the developing towns of the Midwest. Jody Hedlund builds the books around a real piece of American history, the Children's Aid Society and its train placements, but the emotional center stays with family, survival, and the ache of separation.

The novella An Awakened Heart sets some of the social concerns in motion, but the main series begins with With You Always. Elise, Marianne, and Sophie each end up with a book, and that sister structure gives the series a steady pull. Even when the heroines are separated, they are still shaped by the same losses and the same desire to protect one another.

The books never forget the cost of survival.

These women are not chasing adventure for fun. They are trying to find work, make safe choices, escape bad circumstances, and reconnect with people they fear they may have lost forever. Hedlund balances that seriousness with romance, but the romances work because they grow inside practical problems: jobs, travel, children in need, money, reputation, and the question of where a person can truly belong.

The settings matter too. New York feels crowded and precarious. Illinois feels full of possibility but hardly easy. Railroad towns, placement trips, and rough travel keep the books moving, and they also remind readers how uncertain daily life could be for women with few protections.

There is a lot of heart here.

If you like sister stories, found family, and historical romance that pays attention to social history without becoming heavy, Orphan Train is one of Hedlund's strongest series. Read in order if you can, because the emotional payoff grows as the sisters' separate paths begin to connect.
