Series background & context

A Shanahan Match brings Jody Hedlund to 1849 St. Louis, where an ambitious Irish family, a determined local matchmaker, and a city full of danger create the backbone for a lively historical romance series. The Shanahans are prosperous, proud, and very aware of reputation, which means marriage is never just a private affair.

Each book follows a different member of the family or their close circle. Calling on the Matchmaker sets the tone with Finola, Riley, and a cholera outbreak pressing close. Saved by the Matchmaker deepens the family drama through scandal, obligation, and a marriage of convenience. A Wager with the Matchmaker and Marrying the Matchmaker keep building on the same social world while widening the emotional stakes.

St. Louis does a lot of work in this series.

This is not a drawing-room world. It is a river city full of immigrants, elections, gangs, disease, fire, business schemes, and class tension. That restless backdrop helps the romances feel urgent. Couples are not simply wondering whether they suit. They are making choices while the city itself seems to tilt under their feet.

The matchmaker thread gives the series its extra flavor. Hedlund gets good mileage out of family expectations, public gossip, and the idea that people can read everyone else's hearts better than their own. The result is a set of romances that feel both playful and high stakes.

There is also a strong family-saga pull here.

If you like interconnected historical romances where siblings keep showing up in one another's business, A Shanahan Match is especially satisfying. Read in order for the best experience, because the emotional payoff grows as the Shanahan household, the city, and the matchmaker's influence all become more familiar.
