Series background & context

Beacons of Hope is Jody Hedlund's lighthouse series, and it leans hard into everything that makes that setting work so well: isolation, dangerous weather, shipwrecks, rumors, long nights, and people who cannot simply walk away from each other. The books are historical romances, but they also carry a steady thread of suspense.

Most of the stories center on lighthouse keepers, their families, or people whose lives become tangled up with the work of keeping a light burning. In Love Unexpected, Hearts Made Whole, and Undaunted Hope, the stations themselves become pressure cookers where grief, duty, and attraction all meet. The novellas and later books widen the map a little, but the emotional core stays much the same.

The lighthouses do a lot more than decorate the background.

They create loneliness. They create dependence. They create danger. Storms strand people together, injuries need tending, and every rumor feels sharper when there are only a handful of people in sight. Hedlund uses that contained feeling well, especially when a couple must work side by side before they fully trust each other.

The series also has a nice mix of tone. There is mystery in several of the books, sometimes tied to a death, a threat, or a hidden past. There is also hope, especially in the way broken people slowly learn to carry responsibility again. The romances are earnest and emotional, but the plots keep moving.

These books are all about people trying to keep a light alive, literally and otherwise.

If you want historical romance with windswept settings, capable women, wounded heroes, and a little extra suspense, Beacons of Hope is one of Hedlund's most inviting series. The books connect, but each couple's story stands well on its own.
