Series background & context

Jody Hedlund's Uncertain Choice books open the door to her medieval young adult romance world. The series begins with The Vow and An Uncertain Choice, then grows into a larger run of linked stories that follow knights, noblewomen, and rebels across the same world of castles, vows, raids, and court intrigue.

At the heart of the opening story is Lady Rosemarie, who faces a brutal deadline. Because of a vow made at her birth, she is expected to enter a convent unless she can marry before turning eighteen. That premise gives An Uncertain Choice a built-in urgency, but Hedlund does not stop at courtship. Attacks, hidden motives, and questions of loyalty keep pushing the story beyond a simple triangle.

After that, the series widens.

Later books like A Daring Sacrifice, For Love and Honor, A Loyal Heart, and A Worthy Rebel follow other couples tied to the same world. Some are nobles, some are knights, some are women trying to protect their people from cruel rulers or bad bargains. The result feels less like one long romance and more like a connected medieval tapestry.

The tone is adventurous but clean, with plenty of danger and yearning. Hedlund likes secret missions, forced alliances, sieges, relics, and long-held feelings that finally surface under pressure. Her heroines are brave without feeling untouchable, and her heroes are honorable men who still have plenty to learn.

It reads fast.

If you enjoy medieval fiction but want the focus to stay on romance, loyalty, and character growth rather than battle strategy alone, this series hits a nice middle ground. Start with The Vow if you want extra context, or jump into An Uncertain Choice for the main doorway into the world.
