The Lost Princesses Books in Order

The Lost Princesses is one of Jody Hedlund's most overtly fairy-tale series. It begins with Always, a prequel novella about the desperate effort to save three royal children from an invading king, and then follows those hidden princesses years later as they come of age and begin to reclaim what was stolen from them.

The setup is strong right away. Mercia has been taken by the cruel King Ethelwulf, and the rightful heirs have been scattered for their safety. By the time Evermore, Foremost, and Hereafter begin, each princess has grown up in a very different place and under very different beliefs about herself. Each also holds a key tied to an ancient treasure, which gives the trilogy an ongoing quest beneath the romance.

That bigger arc keeps the books moving.

Adelaide, Maribel, and Emmeline each get their own story, but they are all part of the same rebellion. Hedlund mixes hidden identity, forced choices, rescues, travel, and political danger with plenty of yearning. There are rebels, princes, soldiers, abbeys, forests, and castles, but the books never lose sight of the sisters and what it costs them to step into their birthright.

The romances are different from one book to the next. Old friendship, long-secret love, forced marriage, and enemies on opposite sides all come into play. Still, the emotional stakes stay rooted in trust. The princesses are not just trying to fall in love. They are trying to decide who they are, who they can rely on, and what kind of kingdom they want to fight for.

This series feels adventurous from start to finish.
