Series background & context

Colorado Cowgirls is a western historical romance series set in the same Fairplay world as Colorado Cowboys, but this time the spotlight falls more firmly on women trying to make practical decisions in a town that does not always make space for their independence. That shift gives the series a fresh feel even when familiar faces appear.

The books connect through town life and overlapping characters, but each one stands on its own. Committing to the Cowgirl follows a woman returning to Fairplay to practice medicine. Cherishing the Cowgirl, Convincing the Cowgirl, and Captivated by the Cowgirl build around the Courtney sisters and the fate of their boardinghouse. Claiming the Cowgirl adds another heroine trying to protect a child and secure a safer future.

These women are not drifting through the West. They are trying to build something there.

That is the appeal of the series. Boardinghouses, clinics, reputations, money troubles, and custody questions matter as much as romance. The heroines may fall in love, but they also need work, shelter, safety, and a voice in their own futures. Hedlund handles that practical side well.

The tone is warm and readable, with plenty of longing and clean chemistry. Because the books stay tied to a single town, Fairplay starts to feel lived in. Neighbors interfere, old connections resurface, and love stories often bump up against family expectations and the realities of frontier business.

It is a good companion series to Colorado Cowboys.

If you liked the Fairplay setting and wanted even more stories about determined women, steady men, and a western community where everybody seems to know everybody else's business, Colorado Cowgirls will probably land well. Reading the earlier cowboy books adds texture, but it is not required.
