Author bio
Gav Thorpe is an English writer and game designer whose fiction is closely tied to the worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. Born in Hertfordshire, he moved to Nottingham in 1993 after joining Games Workshop at nineteen. He had already spent years reading science fiction and fantasy, painting miniatures, and making up games of his own.
His hobby became his job.
Thorpe spent roughly fourteen years in Games Workshop's Design Studio. He worked on rules, background material, and games including Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Battlefleet Gothic, Gorkamorka, and Inquisitor. That work gave him a practical understanding of how a shared fictional world is built, from huge historical events to the small details that make a faction feel lived in.
When Black Library began publishing fiction, Thorpe moved naturally into prose. His first published story, Birth of a Legend, appeared in Inferno! magazine in 1997. It was an early Warhammer tale, but it opened a second career alongside his games work.
He left Games Workshop in 2008 to write full time, while continuing to work as a freelance author and designer.
A lot of readers know Thorpe through the Dark Angels. Angels of Darkness, the Legacy of Caliban trilogy, and several Horus Heresy stories dig into the First Legion's old loyalties, buried secrets, and uneasy hunt for the Fallen. He is also a major writer of Raven Guard material, especially Deliverance Lost, where Corax tries to rebuild after the Dropsite Massacre while enemies work inside his shattered Legion.
His Eldar and Aeldari books take a different route. Path of the Eldar follows three friends from Craftworld Alaitoc as they choose very different lives, while Asurmen and Jain Zar look back at the Phoenix Lords and the long memory of their people. The Rise of the Ynnari novels bring Yvraine, Ynnead, and the difficult hope of a new Aeldari movement into the foreground.
He also writes outside the far future. The Last Chancers follows Colonel Schaeffer's penal soldiers through missions designed to kill them. Slaves to Darkness is a Warhammer fantasy trilogy about Kurt Leitzig and Ursula, whose lives are pulled apart by Chaos. His original Empire of the Blood novels, beginning with The Crown of the Blood, trade power armour for a harsh fantasy empire, political trouble, and a young claimant caught in a dangerous inheritance.
There is usually a strong sense of pressure in a Gav Thorpe story. Characters are asked to choose between duty, survival, ambition, and the people they thought they could trust. The setting may be enormous, but he often keeps the focus on someone trying to make one bad situation slightly less impossible.
Thorpe still lives in Nottingham. He remains involved with fiction and games, which makes sense for someone who has spent much of his career moving between a game table, a notebook, and a very crowded imaginary galaxy.
