Series background & context

Forgotten Space is one of the more accessible corners of the Forgotten universe because it starts with a clean adventure hook. Nicholas Shepherd is a test pilot for an experimental ship called the Foresight. Earth is under alien occupation, humanity is desperate for a way out, and this unfinished vessel may be the last chance to escape before everything is erased for good.

He is not ready for the mission he gets.

A malfunction and a final enemy attack turn what should have been a test run into an evacuation and then into something much stranger. Nicholas ends up with an accidental crew, a ship that is important for reasons he does not fully understand, and a trail that leads far beyond known space. As the books continue, the questions pile up. Why was Foresight really built? What exactly happened during their escape? And why does every answer seem to make the future less stable instead of more secure?

That uncertainty is the core of the series. Forgotten Space has the energy of a classic starship adventure, but it keeps a reality-bending edge to it. Distress signals, hidden agendas, changed worlds, and unsettling truths about mission and destiny all turn the story away from a straightforward escape narrative. Nicholas remains a useful lead because he is capable, practical, and always a little behind the full picture, which is exactly where the reader is too.

The tone is brisk and easy to read. The books lean more toward exploratory space opera than horror, even when the stakes get very strange. There is still danger, but the pleasure here comes from movement, discovery, and the feeling that the crew is flying deeper into a problem larger than their ship.

If you want a Forbes series that can work as an entry point while still connecting to a bigger universe, Forgotten Space is a good pick. It has starships, mystery, and escalating stakes, but it keeps one foot in the simple appeal of a pilot and a damaged crew trying to steer through a future that may already be coming apart.
