Chaos of the Covenant Books in Order

Chaos of the Covenant begins like a dirty-dozen military sci-fi story and then keeps widening until it becomes a full-on galactic war. The opening hook is simple and strong: the most powerful warships in known space have been stolen, thousands are dead, and the government needs a team reckless enough to go after them. So it recruits criminals, killers, and soldiers with nowhere else to go.

At the center is Abigail Cage, usually called Abbey. She was once an elite soldier. By the time the series opens, she is doing hard labor on the worst planet imaginable. The Republic offers her a brutal deal, help recover the stolen ships and maybe earn freedom, refuse and stay buried where she is. That is how she ends up with the Rejects, a crew made of dangerous people who are useful precisely because they are expendable.

That setup gives the series its best energy. The books are packed with rough camaraderie, bad attitudes, surprising loyalty, and the constant risk that the team might fall apart before the enemy even gets a chance. Forbes leans into the fun of a misfit crew, but he also keeps raising the stakes. What begins as a recovery mission turns into a fight involving the Nephilim, the Seraphim, strange gifts of power, old betrayals, and the possible collapse of everything the Republic thought it understood.

Queenie, the harder and stranger version of Abbey that emerges as the books go on, becomes a big part of the series identity. So does the tension between mythic, almost biblical language and very practical squad-level survival. One page can feel like a prison break, the next like a prophecy gone wrong.

The tone is loud, fast, and irreverent, but not weightless. There are real losses, ugly choices, and enough double-crossing to keep everyone twitchy. If you like military space opera with found-family chemistry, superweapon stakes, and a heroine who keeps getting pushed into larger roles than she ever asked for, this is very much that kind of ride.

It also matters beyond itself. Later Covenant books pick up after this series, so Chaos of the Covenant works as both a complete story and the foundation for a bigger corner of Forbes's universe.
