The Divine Books in Order

The Divine starts with a very human kind of mess. Landon Hamilton is a young ex-con and security guard who should be dead. Instead, death turns out to be a job interview. He meets Dante Alighieri in the afterlife, learns he is a diuscrucis, a rare balance of human, angel, and demon, and gets sent back to Earth to help stop a war between Heaven and Hell.

It does not exactly go smoothly.

That tone, half cosmic stakes and half what now, is a big part of the appeal. Landon is not a polished chosen one. He is confused, irritated, sarcastic, and very aware that he has been handed responsibilities far beyond his pay grade. The books follow him as he learns what his power can do, builds shaky alliances with angels, demons, vampires, and other supernatural figures, and keeps discovering that each victory opens the door to an even worse problem.

The setting is modern Earth, but the supernatural machinery behind it is busy and crowded. There are old powers with long grudges, spiritual politics, hidden lineages, monsters wearing familiar faces, and a constant sense that ordinary life is one thin layer over something much stranger. Forbes keeps the mythology moving. He does not leave Landon standing still for long, and the series quickly grows from one man's resurrection into a much broader fight over balance itself.

The voice matters here. These books are blunt, chatty, and first-person in a way that keeps the biggest ideas grounded. Landon can be talking about apocalypse-level danger and still sound like a guy trying to make sense of a completely broken week. That gives the series a readable, propulsive feel, even when the plot is dealing with hell, angels, ghosts, and reality-shaking threats.

If you like urban fantasy that mixes wisecracks with end-of-the-world stakes, The Divine does that well. It is full of uneasy teams, moral gray areas, and supernatural politics, but it never drifts too far from Landon's point of view. The result is a series that feels both big and personal, like one overmatched man got dropped into the center of creation's worst argument and somehow has to keep it from exploding.
