Series background & context

Forgotten Fallout is one of the roughest, most frontier-flavored branches of the Forgotten universe. The setup is simple in the best way: Earth has already been wrecked by invasion, civilization is shattered, and whatever passes for order survives in hard little pockets. Into that landscape rides Hayden Duke, a lawman trying to do decent work in a world that keeps making decency look foolish.

He keeps doing it anyway.

The series starts with Hayden dealing with the aftermath of alien attack in a place where almost every rule has broken down. He knows trouble when he sees it, but the trouble here is bigger than the usual raider, outlaw, or local tyrant. The fallout is not just physical ruin. It is the start of a new threat, one that grows stranger and more dangerous the deeper Hayden digs. Each attempt to follow the clues drags him farther into a conflict no ordinary sheriff should have to handle.

That is the real fun of the series. Hayden still thinks like a sheriff. He investigates, questions people, protects bystanders, and keeps moving toward the thing that does not want to be found. Around him, though, the world is full of monsters, shattered infrastructure, ugly improvisation, and enemies who are worse than they first appear. The result feels like a western, a monster story, and a post-apocalyptic detective tale all at once.

The tone is lean and punchy. Hayden's stubbornness gives the books their backbone, and the setting gives them texture. Horses, guns, wrecked towns, bad roads, and alien damage all sit beside bigger science fiction ideas without the series losing its dust-and-blood feel.

If you like stories about one steady lawman trying to make moral choices in an immoral landscape, Forgotten Fallout does that very well. It also connects outward into the larger universe, but it never forgets the appeal of watching Hayden Duke take one more awful situation personally and decide, against all common sense, that he is going to fix it.
