Series background & context

Sheriff Duke takes one of the most durable characters in the Forgotten universe and drops him into a series that proudly leans into its western DNA. Earth is ruined, the aliens are gone, and whatever law once existed has mostly burned away. In that wreckage, Hayden Duke rides as a lone gunslinger delivering justice in places where justice is usually a temporary visitor.

Some call him a lawman. Some call him worse.

That broad setup stays consistent, but the series is not just a string of disconnected showdowns. Duke is still carrying the weight of his earlier story, and these books use the frontier structure to push him deeper into his past, his enemies, and the loose threads that still need pulling. He investigates, hunts, and keeps crossing paths with people who would rather the truth stay buried.

The big appeal is tone. Sheriff Duke is post-apocalyptic science fiction, yes, but it is also very comfortable being a western. You feel it in the voice, the landscapes, the talk of legends and vigilantes, and the way Duke himself solves problems. He is not flashy. He is persistent. He walks into bad places, reads the room, and refuses to back down even when the odds are ridiculous.

There is also a nice shift here from the larger universe books. The scale can still grow, but the storytelling often feels closer to the ground. Towns, trails, local threats, uneasy allies, and one stubborn sheriff give the books a more episodic rhythm, even when a bigger arc is in play.

If what you want from Forbes is the most direct blend of sci-fi ruin and western swagger, Sheriff Duke is probably the clearest answer. It is a good continuation for readers who already liked Hayden in the earlier Forgotten books, but it also has enough of its own identity to work as the series where he fully settles into legend.
