Ghosts & Magic is Forbes in urban fantasy mode, and it starts with a hero who sounds like trouble before he even walks into the room. Conor Night is the world's only surviving necromancer. That alone would make life difficult. Add in ghost problems, wizard politics, jobs that go wrong, and the fact that staying alive is expensive, and you have the basic shape of the series.

Conor rarely gets an easy day.

The books move through a modern magical world where power is organized into rival Houses, old grudges are alive and well, and every favor comes with strings attached. Conor is often working at the edges of that system, stealing what he should not, taking jobs for people he does not trust, and trying not to become useful enough for the powerful to keep around or dangerous enough for them to kill outright. Those are not the same thing, but they are close.

What makes the series fun is the mix of noir energy and supernatural clutter. Conor is sarcastic, battered, and aware that his luck is questionable. The stories throw him against cults, rogue wizards, undead complications, and apocalyptic plans, but they keep his voice close enough that the world never turns into pure mythology homework. Even when the stakes rise toward the end of the series, the books stay grounded in bad calls, hard bargains, and grim jokes.

There is also a good sense of escalation. The early books feel like dangerous errands in a hidden magical society. Later entries make it clear that the cracks in that society are widening into something much worse. By then, Conor has enough history, enemies, and reluctant allies for every choice to land harder.

If you like urban fantasy with necromancy, sharp humor, and a lead who keeps surviving by nerve rather than destiny, Ghosts & Magic is easy to recommend. It has monsters and end-of-the-world pressure, but it also has the practical charm of a protagonist who would probably rather just get paid and not die tonight.
