Fall of Under is a sequel series to The Masks of Under, set centuries later in the same world. It keeps the weird, dangerous magic of Under, but shifts the tone toward darker fantasy horror by bringing in an outbreak of the dead and a heroine who arrives from a place where survival has already taught her to be ruthless.

That heroine is Ember. She comes from Gioll, a world where mortals are outnumbered by the walking dead, and she wakes to find herself in Under, a place that should be impossible and almost immediately proves to be no safer. Worse, the catastrophe she knows from home has followed her.

Then there is Rxa. He has been dead for four hundred years before he returns as the new King of Poison, which tells you a lot about the energy this series is working with. He is not a gentle guide into this world. He is part of the danger, part of the mystery, and part of the reason Ember's choices keep getting harder instead of easier.

The books revolve around an escalating crisis. Under is threatened by flesh-eating corpses, old powers, and a larger war that never stays neatly contained. Ember is caught between the living and the dead, between duty and desire, and between the practical need to stop the end of the world and the deeply inconvenient fact that she keeps getting pulled toward the wrong man.

It gets messy fast.

What makes Fall of Under stand out is the mix of apocalypse and dreamlike fantasy. You get the elaborate setting of Under, its rulers and strange rules, but now those things are under direct pressure from horror elements that feel invasive and unstoppable. The romance runs hot through all of that, but it never erases the rot around the edges.

Read this one in order, starting with Mask of Poison. It works best for readers who already know The Masks of Under, but even on its own it offers a dark, high-stakes story about death, resurrection, and love turning into one more problem in a collapsing world.
