Vile & Virtue Books in Order

Vile & Virtue feels like Kathryn Ann Kingsley letting herself get extra playful and extra dark at the same time. The premise is wild in a way that tells you immediately whether the duet is for you: every story ever told exists in one place, two sisters get dragged into that place, and twin demigods made from villainy and heroism decide to turn their lives into a game.

Sasha Lancaster is paired with Vile, a mind-reading nightmare who is bored, theatrical, and absolutely delighted by the chaos he creates. Her twin sister Sidney ends up with Virtue, whose role sounds safer on paper than it really is. Together they are pulled through a competition built from familiar stories, impossible rules, and the very real possibility of dying for good.

The books have a strong metafiction streak. They are interested in heroes and villains as ideas, in what stories expect from women, and in how desire changes when the man tempting you is not just dangerous, but partly made from every dangerous character ever imagined. That could have turned abstract, but the series keeps it grounded in Sasha and Sidney's fight to survive and hold onto each other.

Vile, in particular, is the kind of Kingsley creation that explains a lot about her readership. He is funny, monstrous, self-aware, and deeply bad news. The fact that the story knows he is bad news is what makes the romance tension work.

This duet is strange on purpose.

If you want a neat, conventional fantasy romance, this is not that. If you want something more surreal, more story-conscious, and still very committed to dangerous attraction, start with The Beginning and then move to The End. It is a compact series, but it aims big and gets there through style, emotion, and a lot of wicked fun.
