The Iron Crystal Books in Order

The Iron Crystal takes a familiar portal-fantasy idea and turns it sharply darker. Gwen is pulled into Avalon and lands directly in the power of Mordred, the Prince in Iron, a ruler who traps his enemies in an enchanted crystal prison and controls the magic of the realm with a closed fist.

That would already be enough trouble.

But the series gets moving because Mordred is not only cruel and powerful. He is also strangely gentle with Gwen, which makes him much harder to read and much more dangerous to trust. Gwen soon strikes a deal with one of his enemies. If she can break the crystal, she can win her freedom and go home. So the romance begins with espionage, deception, and a plan that depends on getting close to the man she means to betray.

The Arthurian angle gives the setting extra flavor. This is Avalon filtered through Kingsley's love of villain romance, not a bright chivalric retelling. Magic is unstable, ancient grudges matter, and the kingdom itself changes once the crystal's control begins to crack. As the series continues, the focus widens from seduction and court tension into war, unleashed magic, and the cost of loving someone built to rule through fear.

Gwen and Mordred carry all four books, which gives the story time to let both desire and damage deepen. The push and pull between them does not resolve quickly, and that is a big part of the appeal.

If you want dark fantasy with court intrigue, betrayal, and a very bad man at the center of a big magical system, this is a strong place to go. Start with To Charm a Dark Prince and read straight through. The quartet is really one long fall into Avalon and all the trouble waiting there.
