An English Enchantment is built around Elizabeth Sutton, a local reporter who returns to Black Bridge thinking life in the English countryside will be slower and simpler. Instead she stumbles into murder, local politics, and the unsettling possibility that old stories about witches in town were true all along.

Black Bridge is the kind of setting that does a lot of work for a cozy mystery. It is small, old, and full of people who already know one another's history. Elizabeth is not investigating as a detective. She is a journalist, which gives the series a nice angle. She asks questions for a living, notices what people leave out, and has to deal with the extra complication of an ex who works as the local police sergeant.

The magic stays tied to place. Webb uses village meetings, planning disputes, rumors, and everyday local life as the door into bigger secrets. Once the paranormal side opens up, Elizabeth has to balance ordinary reporting with a hidden magical layer under the town she thought she knew.

It is a quieter series than some of Webb's island books, but not a sleepy one.
