Series background & context

The Wildes Witches books are the foundation of Mara Webb's bibliography. Nora Wildes begins the series at rock bottom, separated from her husband, working bad jobs, and trying to figure out what comes next. Then she learns her aunt Edith is dead, and supposedly drowned.

There is one problem with that. Witches cannot drown.

Back in Sucre, Nora inherits more than a house and some money. She inherits magic, a suspicious death, a talking cat named Quinn, and a town that is a lot darker than she remembered from childhood. That first-book setup does most of the work for the whole series. Nora is always a little off balance, always learning another hidden rule, and always one clue away from finding out that the danger around her runs deeper than she thought.

Sucre and the nearby lake give the books a slightly gothic edge beneath the cozy surface. The town is small, but it does not feel harmless. Webb uses that well, mixing romantic subplots, family secrets, local politics, and magical crimes into fast, readable mysteries.

This is the place to start if you want to see the pattern Webb returns to again and again: a woman rebuilding her life, a magical inheritance, and a community full of secrets. Later series branch out in different directions, but Wildes Witches is where the core recipe really clicks.
