Series background & context
Wicked Witches of Pendle Island starts with Chelsea Moon arriving on Pendle Island for what should have been an escape. Instead she walks into a dead great-aunt, a surprise inheritance, and the news that she is a witch. Her new life also includes a haunted mansion, a pirate ghost, a demanding familiar, and a family curse that refuses to mind its own business.
This series has a bigger haunted-house feel than some of Mara Webb's other cozies. Chelsea is not simply settling into a quirky town. She is dropped into a place with deep grudges, romantic complications, and a lot of magical baggage attached to her family name. The island itself is part of the appeal, strange enough to feel cut off, cozy enough to make every feud seem inescapably local.
The cat is not especially sympathetic.
Across the books, Chelsea has to juggle everyday problems with increasingly tangled supernatural ones. She is learning how magic works, dealing with ghosts who will not stay quiet, and trying to keep herself from repeating the worst parts of her family history. Webb balances that with the usual cozy pleasures, local events, side characters, and a steady stream of murders and near disasters.
If you like your paranormal mysteries with a little more chaos, more haunting, and a lead who never asked for any of this, Pendle Island is easy to sink into.
