Noirstar Witch Mysteries starts from a fun reversal. Nyx Noirstar is the resident dark witch of Dewdrop Grove, and she would like everyone to stop assuming dark magic automatically makes her the villain. She is prickly, solitary, and very aware of her reputation. Then a dying woman speaks Nyx's name with her last breath, and suddenly being the obvious suspect stops being funny.

Nyx is a stronger personality than some of Mara Webb's more overwhelmed heroines, and that gives the series a sharper, snarkier tone. She has a temporary familiar, a scruffy cat named Grimalkin, a handsome local man she would rather not think about, and a murder case that drags her through haunted woods, ritual sites, and the kind of magical trouble that does not stay politely in the background.

It is good to be bad, until somebody frames you for murder.

Even with that slightly edgier setup, the series still reads like a cozy. The town is close-knit, the relationships matter, and the fun comes from watching Nyx act like a lone wolf while slowly getting pulled into connections she pretends not to want. If you like witch mysteries with more attitude and a heroine who already knows her power, this is the Mara Webb series to try.
