Series background & context

World As Myth is the name Heinlein gave to the tangle of late‑career novels where his characters discover that fictional universes are real—and that storytellers themselves help create them. Instead of a straight timeline, you get a playful, looping multiverse.

The core books are Time Enough for Love, The Number of the Beast, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, and To Sail Beyond the Sunset. Together they pull in Lazarus Long and the Howard Families, veterans of lunar revolutions, lawyers from Stranger in a Strange Land, and walk‑on parts from half a dozen earlier stories.

On the surface these books offer adventurous material: time travel, dimension‑hopping cars, secret families of near‑immortals, and brushes with classic imaginary worlds. Underneath, they spend a lot of time on talk—about love and sex, personal freedom, the right way to raise children, and the limits of any government.

The “World as Myth” idea is simple but far‑reaching: any world imagined in a story or dream exists somewhere, and particularly strong imaginations can cross between them. That lets Heinlein visit, and sometimes parody, everything from his own Future History to other writers’ creations, while admitting that his timelines don’t always line up.

Because these novels lean heavily on characters and events introduced earlier, many readers prefer not to start their Heinlein journey here. Having Methuselah's Children, some of the juvenile novels, and at least one of the major stand‑alones under your belt makes the cameos and in‑jokes land much more clearly.

If you do dive in, expect long conversations, sudden shifts in setting, and the sense that Heinlein is using his fictional family to look back over his whole career. For some readers it feels like an indulgent coda; for others, it’s a chance to spend more time with favorite characters after the main stories are done.
