The Wizard's Daughters
by Michael Dalton
2014
Down-on-his-luck swordsman Erich von Jülich-Berg accepts a guard job escorting artificer Walther and his twin mage daughters to Köln, hoping only to refill his purse. Instead he is pulled into their search for a magically compatible husband and into an alternate-history tangle of steampunk, sorcery, and forbidden attraction.
Series background & context
Twin Magic is one of Dalton's earlier series and has a slightly different flavor from his more overtly GameLit work. Set in an alternate version of pre-Reformation Germany, it combines low steampunk touches, fairy-tale motifs, and a quietly odd romance at its core.
The first book, The Wizard's Daughters, follows Erich von Jülich-Berg, a down-on-his-luck swordsman looking for any job that will refill his purse. He signs on to protect Walther the Artificer, a tinkerer and minor mage, on a journey from their small village to the Free City of Köln. Traveling with them are Walther's twin daughters, Ariel and Astrid, who are talented mages in their own right.
In this world, marriage among mages is not a simple matter of affection. Partners are chosen according to their place in the magical Flow, a kind of mystical current that governs compatibility and power. Ariel and Astrid are searching for a husband who fits that pattern, not necessarily someone they love at first sight. Erich's presence upends their careful plans and drags old wounds from his past back into the light.
The second book, The Witches' Covenant, sends Erich and the twins on a winter journey to Wittenberg, where he hopes to enter the service of a powerful Elector. Their route leads them through Marburg, a town caught between an ambitious young Landgrave and a band of forest witches bound to the region by a centuries-old agreement.
As the political bargain unravels, Erich and his wives are pulled into a conflict that forces them to question what their unusual magical bond really means. The series uses its quasi-historical backdrop to play with questions of faith, authority, and the cost of peace, all while maintaining a slightly twisted fairy-tale tone.
Twin Magic features romance and some adult content, but it leans more on atmosphere, slow-burn relationship building, and clever reworking of folk stories than on explicit scenes. It is a good entry point if you want to see Dalton blending magic and history in a more restrained, almost storybook style before diving into his wilder universes.
