Master of Thieves

by Michael Dalton

2021

Rafiq, an orphan turned master burglar, lives well off Avanasia’s trade, jewels, and willing courtesans. Stealing an ancient heirloom blade from the wrong merchant upends that life, dragging him into a deadly struggle between the Thieves Guild, a fanatical priesthood, and powers that want his skills and his growing harem.

Series background & context

Master of Thieves takes place in Avanasia, a glittering desert city where wealth and power are hoarded by a few, and everyone else survives by wit or obedience. In this world there are two kinds of people: those who have, and those who take.

Rafiq starts firmly in the second camp. Orphaned young and raised on the streets, he has become one of Avanasia’s most talented burglars by the time readers meet him. He knows every rooftop path, every weak lock, and every way to slip out of a noble's bedchamber before anyone is the wiser. Gold, jewels, and the occasional risky affair with a courtesan are his rewards.

The story kicks into motion when Rafiq steals an heirloom blade from the wrong merchant. The weapon is more than a valuable trinket; it is tied to old magic and older grudges. That single job puts him in the crosshairs of Avanasia’s merchant princes, the fanatical priesthood of the Eight Dead Gods, and the ruthless leadership of the Thieves Guild itself.

To survive, Rafiq is forced to assemble a crew that is part gang and part harem: a goblin thief, an elven archer, an ex-courtesan, and other women with specialized skills and their own reasons for joining him. The series leans into caper storytelling, with intricate heists, double-crosses, and shifting alliances layered over explicit relationships and dark magic.

As the books progress, Avanasia itself becomes a character. Its alleys and bazaars hide cults that worship a so-called Reborn God, desert tribes with their own forbidden faiths, and a long-standing agreement between thieves and priests that keeps the city from tearing itself apart. When that balance starts to slip, Rafiq finds his personal survival tied to the fate of the entire city.

Master of Thieves is for readers who like their fantasy dirty and dangerous, full of rooftop chases, secret temples, and the constant sense that one wrong move could cost everything. It connects loosely to Dalton's wider Empyrea setting, but you can enjoy the series on its own as a gritty, harem-tinged heist adventure.
