Sword of the Dead Books in Order

Sword of the Dead takes the loose shape of the Persephone myth and turns it into an adventure fantasy. Princess Thea is snatched away by a monster and taken to an underground kingdom. That would be enough for one story. Rice adds two more strong angles to it: Lance, a peasant boy desperate to prove himself by rescuing her, and an unlikely thief above ground who may be the one keeping the kingdom from collapsing while everyone else is looking the other way.

That split gives the series range.

Part of the story is a rescue quest through trials, monsters, and hidden passages below the earth. Part of it is a crumbling kingdom above, where betrayal and political weakness make the abduction more dangerous than it first appears. The books can move between mythic underworld adventure and more familiar court-collapse fantasy without losing their center.

Lance is classic Morgan Rice material, a young outsider trying to earn respect in a world that has not given him much. But the princess and the thief matter just as much, because this is not only about one boy becoming brave. It is about multiple people trying to hold together a world split between surface and underground.

If you like monsters, hidden kingdoms, rescue quests, and fantasy that borrows from myth without turning into a straight retelling, Sword of the Dead has an easy-to-grasp premise and a steady action-first pace.
