It starts with Oliver, an inventive, lonely boy who is treated badly by the family around him and never feels at home in ordinary life. He knows he is different, but he does not yet know how different.

That is the turn that gives the series its spark. An abandoned invention factory, a mysterious older figure, and the possibility that the place is not really abandoned at all. From there the story opens into a magical school setting, but with a time-slip twist that sends Oliver toward 1944 and a hidden world of children with powers.

Oliver's love of invention matters because it gives the books a slightly different flavor from standard magic-school fantasy. He is not just a chosen student wandering into mystery.
