Series background & context
Age of the Sorcerers opens on a sixteen-year-old blacksmith's son from a poor family, a boy who has little chance to rise in the world he was born into. That alone gives the series its shape. This is another Morgan Rice coming-of-age fantasy, but one tied especially closely to dragons, invasion, and a kingdom already in decline.
The dragon element matters from the start.
Rice frames the series around a world where the dragon race is dying, kingdoms are unstable, and magic is not just a gift but part of a larger historical shift. That makes the books feel a little more melancholy than her brightest quest fantasies. There is still action and adventure, but there is also a steady sense that something old and powerful is being lost.
Because the hero begins outside the noble ranks, the story gets good mileage from class barriers, resentment, and the longing to prove worth in a rigid system. Courts, battlefields, and hidden truths all grow out of that first position.
The books move through dragons, crowns, shields, and dreams for a reason. This is a series about inheritance, power, and whether a kingdom facing change can be remade before it collapses completely. It is less urban, less romantic-first, and more rooted in the fantasy of kingdoms on the edge.
If you want Morgan Rice at her most dragon-focused, with a rising hero, a troubled realm, and a strong sense of old magic fading while new danger takes over, this series fits that mood well.
