Author bio
Regina Jennings writes historical romance with a strong sense of place, plenty of lively complications, and characters trying to make honest lives in difficult circumstances. Her stories move through Texas, the Missouri Ozarks, Oklahoma Territory, and the mining town of Joplin, often following people who have been underestimated, misplaced, or forced to start over.
Her route to publishing was not a straight line. Jennings earned an English degree, with a minor in history, from Oklahoma Baptist University. She married, raised four children, and worked a collection of very different jobs, including newspaper work and time at the Oklahoma National Stockyards.
Yes, she weighed pigs.
For a time, writing a novel felt like the kind of dream best kept quiet. She had written newsletters, mission materials, and youth-group skits, but she did not think of herself as someone who could become a traditionally published novelist. In the winter of 2009, she made a New Year's resolution to try. She joined a local writers' group, began her first manuscript in secret, and later attended a writers' conference with encouragement from her husband.
That first novel became Sixty Acres and a Bride, published in 2012. Set in 1870s Texas, it follows Rosa Garner, a young widow returning to a family ranch with her mother-in-law and facing a crushing tax bill. The book introduces a pattern readers can expect from Jennings: practical problems, close-knit communities, humor, faith, and a romance complicated by old hurts.
She kept building from there.
The Ladies of Caldwell County books stay in Texas, while the Ozark Mountain Romance novels head to Pine Gap, Missouri, where a disputed marriage, a lost painting, and masked vigilantes all bring trouble to town. In the Fort Reno series, the late nineteenth-century Oklahoma setting gives her room for a dance-hall singer posing as a governess, a painter stranded after a stagecoach attack, and a land-run rivalry. The Joplin Chronicles shifts to 1898 Missouri, pairing a Pinkerton operative, a restless ranch woman, and a self-taught architect with problems that demand more than polite manners.
Jennings's heroines are often working women with plans of their own. They teach school, report for newspapers, manage homes, investigate crimes, care for families, or pursue work not usually open to them. Her heroes tend to have responsibilities they cannot easily set aside, whether that means a ranch, a business, a badge, a military post, or a community depending on them. The romances grow through trust, banter, and the hard work of changing course.
Her books are Christian historical romances, but the faith element usually lives alongside the plot rather than stopping it. Characters wrestle with forgiveness, grief, honesty, family loyalty, and what to do when their carefully made plans fall apart.
Along the way, Jennings has received the National Readers' Choice Award, and her work has been a finalist for the Christy Award and the Oklahoma Book of the Year Award. Her novels have also been translated into three languages.
She lives outside Oklahoma City with her husband and family, in a neighborhood she has described as full of relatives. That Oklahoma connection shows up on the page. Even when the setting is rough, her stories make room for neighborly interference, local history, and the stubborn hope of people determined to build a home.
