Caught in the Middle shifts to Anne Tillerton, a buffalo hunter arriving in Garber, Texas, while searching for a missing cook. A train robbery reunites her with Nicholas Lovelace, a businessman from her past. When the missing woman leaves an infant behind, Anne and Nick become unlikely partners in deciding what to do next. Anne's outdoor life and Nick's ambitions make them an awkward pair in polite society, while both face difficult questions about responsibility.

The series has humor, but it does not treat its characters' losses lightly. Grief, reputation, money, family pressure, and the fear of choosing badly all matter. Jennings also lets the Texas setting do real work. Ranching, travel, local business, and the distance between towns are not decorations. They create the problems the characters must solve.
