Series background & context

The Ozark Mountain Romance series is set in Missouri after the Civil War, with much of the action centered on the small town of Pine Gap and the surrounding Ozarks. The landscape matters here. Farms, mountain roads, creeks, livestock, isolated homes, and hard travel keep people close to the land and sometimes far from easy help. Pine Gap is also a place where everybody knows a little too much about everybody else.

The novels feature different couples, but recurring characters and local troubles connect them. Jennings blends romance with mysteries, mix-ups, and community conflict. The atmosphere can be funny and warm, yet the characters are often dealing with serious matters such as war injuries, grief, corruption, family duty, and the struggle to make a secure home.

A Most Inconvenient Marriage starts the series with Civil War nurse Abigail Stuart. She agrees to marry a dying patient who calls himself Jeremiah Calhoun, believing the arrangement will give her a home and ensure care for his ailing sister. After the war, Abigail reaches the Missouri farm only to meet the actual Jeremiah Calhoun, alive, wounded, and understandably confused by the woman claiming to be his wife. Their forced partnership has to survive suspicion, family needs, and the truth about the man Abigail married.

In At Love's Bidding, Boston auction-house worker Miranda Wimplegate accidentally sells a powerful family's portrait. She and her grandfather trace it to the Ozarks and buy what they think is a local auction house, only to discover they have acquired a livestock business instead. Wyatt Ballentine has kept that business running and is not pleased by his new owners' lack of cattle knowledge. The missing painting gives them a reason to work together, even as their different worlds collide.

The novella Her Dearly Unintended returns to Pine Gap through Katie Ellen and Josiah Huckabee. Heavy rain strands a threatening stranger at Katie Ellen's farm, and Josiah claims the farm and Katie Ellen as his own in order to protect her. It is a quick, storm-bound story that also lets readers see familiar characters at a later stage of life.

For the Record follows the grown-up Betsy Huckabee, an ambitious journalist who wants enough success to become independent. She turns Pine Gap's new deputy, Joel Puckett, into the hero of a romantic newspaper serial, never expecting him to see it. Joel is trying to restore order while masked vigilantes create fear and confusion across the area. Their clashing ambitions make both the romance and the mystery harder to manage.

Start with A Most Inconvenient Marriage for the clearest introduction to Pine Gap. Read in order for the best payoff from returning characters, though each book has its own central romance and can be enjoyed for its mix of Ozark history, banter, danger, and hard-won belonging.
