Series background & context
Not Too Late is a paranormal women’s fantasy series about Rita Hayworth, a woman in midlife whose old life has stopped fitting. After years of being overlooked in her marriage and work, Rita inherits an antique shop in Hallow Hill, a small English village where magic is ordinary to the people who live there.
The inheritance changes everything. Rita finds that the town’s friendly faces include witches, fae, vampires, pixies, brownies, and other supernatural neighbors. She also discovers that the magical world needs someone practical, fair-minded, and willing to listen before jumping to conclusions.
That person turns out to be Rita.
As she settles into Hallow Hill, Rita takes on the work of magistrate. Court cases bring the series much of its ongoing structure, from community disputes to problems involving powerful magical beings who are used to getting their own way. Rita is new to this world, but she brings ordinary common sense, empathy, and the stubbornness to insist that old customs are not always good customs.
Her relationship with Keir, a powerful member of the magical community, grows alongside her new role. The books also build a warm supporting cast of friends, shopkeepers, court staff, magical dogs, and neighbors. Food, tea, village gatherings, and wry conversation sit beside threats from creatures and forces that are far less cozy.
The series has a gentler pace than Danann’s Black Swan adventures, though it still includes mysteries, magical danger, romance, and court intrigue. Its main pleasure is watching Rita make a real life for herself after believing that her chances for change had passed.
Start with Midlife Magic. Rita’s move to Hallow Hill and her first steps into its hidden society give the later books their emotional foundation.
