Author bio
Julie Caplin also writes as Jules Wake, and between the two names she has become known for warm, travel-soaked romances filled with food, friendship and hopeful endings. Born in Yorkshire and now based in the Chiltern Hills north of London, she still jokes that she misses proper hills from her childhood landscapes.
As a child she devoured books and let her imagination run ahead of her homework. A visit to the Brontë parsonage at Haworth with her grandmother lit the fuse, and she decided, in that serious way children have, that one day she would be a writer.
She went on to study English at the University of East Anglia, then slid happily into the glossy but deeply shallow world of public relations. For years she wrote press releases, escorted journalists around European cities and tasted her way through restaurants, bars and vineyards, all the while quietly storing away details for future stories.
The real push came when she took a short creative-writing course between PR jobs. The course convinced her that writing was not just a daydream, and when it ended she set up the Tring Writers’ Circle so she would have people to share work and moan about plots with. Out of that routine came her first published novel, Talk to Me, a contemporary romance released in 2014 under the name Jules Wake.
More books followed in quick succession. The With Love road-trip trilogy took characters across Italy, Paris at Christmas and Rome, mixing family secrets, second chances and a lot of European scenery. She then wrote standalones like Escape to the Riviera, Covent Garden in the Snow and A Girl’s Best Friend, which lean into her fondness for messy lives, dogs, small communities and the way a change of place can shake someone loose.
Writing as Julie Caplin, she created the Romantic Escapes series, starting with The Little Café in Copenhagen and moving on to Brooklyn, Paris, Iceland, Croatia, Tokyo, the Swiss Alps, rural Ireland, the Scottish Highlands, the Champagne region of France, the Amalfi coast, Prague and Portugal. Each book stands alone, but together they form a map of comfort-food hotspots and armchair holidays, and they have sold more than a million copies in translation across Europe.
Recent titles have taken readers to a tiny teashop in Tokyo, a ski chalet in Switzerland, an Irish cookery school, a Champagne chateau and a sun-soaked villa on the Amalfi coast, as well as a wintery attic flat in Prague and a Christmas fantasy on New York’s Fifth Avenue. Across both names she tends to write about ordinary women pushed into new places, who discover that travel, good food and unexpected friendships can make them braver than they thought.
After years of juggling fiction with a role in school administration, she left her job as a school business manager in January 2019 to write full time. These days she splits her time between drafting new stories, talking to readers, travelling whenever she can and continuing the serious work of taste-testing gin. She lives in the Chiltern Hills with her husband, Nick, and their two children, and still claims the best part of her job is that it lets her make things up for a living.
