Author bio
Julie Ann Walker was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and grew up in a house full of women, including three older sisters. She has joked that there was never a shortage of drama or romance around her, which feels like a pretty good training ground for a romantic suspense writer. Her mother signed her up for a book club as soon as she learned to read, and that early nudge turned into a lifelong reading habit.
Writing came early too. In high school, Walker won writing contests and served as senior editor of The Tiger's Tale, her school newspaper. She liked stories, but she also liked a challenge, and in college she took a different academic path, earning a Bachelor of Science degree before starting work as an advanced high school mathematics teacher.
That math-teacher chapter matters because it says a lot about the way she works. Walker has described reading and writing as second nature, so teaching gave her a different kind of problem solving. She enjoyed the classroom, the students, and the daily puzzle of the job. But the pull of books never really went away.
Then Chicago entered the picture.
A move there pushed her back toward writing, and the result came quickly. Her debut novel, Hell on Wheels, arrived in 2012 and launched the Black Knights Inc. series, a world of covert operators, motorcycles, and high-stakes romance. That same year, In Rides Trouble reached the New York Times bestseller list, and Walker quickly became a familiar name to readers who like action with their love stories.
A lot of her appeal comes from how clearly she knows her lane. In books like Rev It Up, Wild Ride, and Hot Pursuit, she pairs danger with banter, damaged heroes with capable women, and team loyalty with plenty of sparks. Later, with the Deep Six books such as Hell or High Water and Devil and the Deep, she traded city streets for tropical waters, treasure hunting, and former SEALs who discover retirement is never as quiet as it sounds.
She has also shown she can shift gears. In Moonlight and Memories leans more into emotion and long history, following three friends whose lives never quite untangled. Across her work, certain things keep showing up: tight-knit groups, people with military or intelligence backgrounds, women who know their own minds, and love stories that have to survive real danger before they can settle down.
She likes momentum.
That shows up in her career too. Walker's books have landed on bestseller lists and picked up award attention, including the Book Buyer's Best Award and nominations from groups such as the RITA, the National Readers Choice Award, the Bookseller's Best Award, and the Australian Romance Reader Awards. Even with all of that, her public bio still leaves room for the smaller details that make her feel like a real person, not just a byline.
Those smaller details are often the best part. She loves travel and has said she likes finding views that can compete with her deadlines. When she is not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, reading, and petting every dog that wanders by. That mix of discipline, curiosity, and everyday warmth fits her books pretty well.
