Series background & context
The Romantic Escapes books follow different heroines who all have one thing in common, they are ready, or are forced, to shake up their lives somewhere far from home. Each novel drops a mostly British protagonist into a vivid new setting, from candlelit cafés in Copenhagen to Brooklyn brownstones, Parisian patisseries, Icelandic lodges and Croatian coves.
Most of the leads arrive with baggage. Kate heads to Denmark after a brutal promotion betrayal at her London PR job, Sophie flees heartbreak to live above a Brooklyn bakery, and Nina escapes family expectations by helping to run a patisserie course in Paris. As the series goes on, readers meet women recovering from workplace disasters, failed relationships or long-held family secrets, all of them using travel as a way to reboot.
The hook of each book is the mix of location and food. In Copenhagen, hygge, cinnamon pastries and hot chocolate stand in for therapy. In New York it is bagels, cupcakes and late-night diners. Iceland brings geothermal pools, log fires and northern skies, while Croatia offers a summer on a luxury yacht among turquoise bays. Tokyo comes with steaming bowls of noodles and formal tea ceremonies, the Swiss Alps deliver molten cheese and hot chocolate, and rural Ireland serves up cookery-school comfort food and pub evenings.
Although the settings change, the emotional arc stays reassuring. Each heroine finds herself in a place where she feels like an outsider at first, learning the rhythms of a new culture and, usually, a new job. Along the way she collects an improvised family of fellow travellers, locals and colleagues, and discovers that she is braver and more capable than she believed. The romances are slow burn and rooted in everyday connection, often between people who clash on first meeting but end up seeing past first impressions.
The books are loosely linked. Side characters from one story often return as leads or supporting cast in another, so regular readers enjoy spotting familiar faces opening a café, teaching a course or turning up for a wedding in a later volume. At the same time, every title works as a standalone, so you can jump straight into the location that appeals most, whether that is the Champagne region in The French Champagne Chateau, the Amalfi coast in A Villa with a View, wintertime Prague in A Little Place in Prague or Portugal’s Algarve in The Hotel by the Sea.
Tone-wise, Romantic Escapes sits firmly in cosy contemporary romance. Expect sensory detail, gentle humour and plenty of scenes built around shared meals, markets and local rituals. Serious topics like grief, burnout or difficult families do appear, but the series consistently steers toward hope, chosen family and the feeling that a well-timed trip away can help you come home to yourself.
