Author bio
Julie Anne Long grew up in California with stories on the brain and music in her ears. She edited school papers, drew comic strips, and filled notebooks with characters long before she ever imagined those obsessions would turn into a career.
In college she gravitated toward newsroom life and briefly majored in journalism, chasing deadlines and learning how to tell a tight, clear story. Before long she switched to creative writing, realizing she was less interested in recording facts than in inventing lives, loves, and the messy emotions in between.
Romance arrived early, courtesy of a dog eared historical she quietly borrowed from her mother. Around the same time she fell in love with history, devouring books about past eras and acting out scenes from favorite stories with her sister. Those two threads, swoony love stories and deep curiosity about the past, would eventually braid together in her fiction.
After college she spent years as a working musician, playing guitar, writing songs, and hauling amps into tiny clubs at midnight. The rock and roll dream came with glorious highs and plenty of exhaustion, but it also gave her a sharp ear for rhythm, dialogue, and the way a single line can crack a heart wide open.
Between gigs she wrote the manuscript that became The Runaway Duke, a Regency romance about an inconveniently alive duke and the unconventional woman who runs away with him. Selling that first novel to a major publisher nudged her from smoky stages to the quieter but no less intense work of building fictional worlds.
Those worlds expanded dramatically with the long running Pennyroyal Green series, which follows the feuding Eversea and Redmond families in a Sussex village. Beginning with The Perils of Pleasure and running through reader favorites like What I Did For a Duke and The Legend of Lyon Redmond, the books mix family rivalries, vivid side characters, and romances that balance humor with genuine emotional risk.
She has also played in other historical sandboxes. The Holt Sisters trilogy braids together espionage, mystery, and three estranged sisters, while the Palace of Rogues novels take place at the Grand Palace on the Thames, a boarding house run by two determined women who reinvent themselves. Starting with Lady Derring Takes a Lover and continuing through books like After Dark with the Duke and You Were Made to Be Mine, the series leans into found family, older or battle scarred protagonists, and second chances.
Long stepped into contemporary romance with the Hellcat Canyon books, set in a quirky Northern California town where washed up actors, small town sheriffs, florists, and tech CEOs all get their turn at a hard won happy ending. Titles such as Hot in Hellcat Canyon and The First Time at Firelight Falls keep the wit and emotional intensity of her historicals but swap ballrooms for dive bars and redwoods.
Over the years her work has earned a devoted readership and plenty of formal praise. It Started With a Scandal won the RITA Award for short historical romance, her novels have appeared on many best of lists, and the Pennyroyal Green series was named one of the top romance series of all time by a major public radio poll. Her books have been translated into numerous languages and are passed from reader to reader with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for secret recipes.
She currently lives in Northern California, where she writes, listens to music a little too loudly, and feeds her love of history with trips to museums, concerts, and old neighborhoods. Whether she is writing about Regency smugglers on the English coast or single parents in a modern canyon town, she keeps circling the same questions, about desire, loyalty, and how people find the courage to remake their lives when it would be easier not to.
