Series background & context
The Highland Bodyguards series follows an elite group of warriors who serve King Robert the Bruce during Scotland's long fight for independence. Their work takes them far beyond castle gates. They escort vulnerable allies, chase spies, go undercover, guard political secrets, and cross dangerous territory with people who may not want their protection.
Duty comes first. Until love makes that difficult.
The series opens with The Lady's Protector. After Bannockburn, Ansel Sutherland is ordered to protect the illegitimate son of an English earl. His assignment puts him in the path of Lady Isolda, a guarded woman with secrets and every reason to distrust a Highland warrior who arrives demanding answers. Their story establishes the series pattern: a mission, a woman in danger, and a protector who finds the line between professional duty and personal feeling impossible to hold.
Each main novel turns to a different member of the group or a connected warrior. Heart's Thief follows Colin MacKay and Sabine, a thief whose intercepted messages put her at the center of a spy hunt. In A Warrior's Pledge, Finn Sutherland is assigned to protect Lady Rosamond as she prepares for an alliance marriage. Later books bring in undercover work, bounty hunters, forced marriages, enemy territory, and threats from both English and Scottish rivals.
The historical backdrop matters. King Robert's cause, fragile alliances, and the effects of war shape the choices the characters make. Yet these are romance-forward stories. The action gives the couples pressure and momentum, while each book focuses on a distinct relationship and delivers its own happy ending.
There is plenty of danger, but also a strong sense of fellowship among the bodyguards. Returning characters appear across the series, and their shared history makes the later books more rewarding when read in order. Novellas such as A Highland Betrothal and The Laird's Yuletide Bride fit between the full-length stories and add more time with the wider group.
The tone is adventurous, emotional, and steamy. Expect protectors with scars, capable women who have their own plans, secret identities, political tension, and long journeys through medieval Scotland. Castles, islands, borderlands, and battle-scarred roads all play a part.
Start with The Lady's Protector. It introduces the world, the king's bodyguard corps, and the loyalties that carry through the entire series.
