Series background & context

The Shaws and MacRobs series begins with two Highland clans who have reached the point where a long-running quarrel could turn into open war. In Highland Feud, King Robert wants the fighting stopped, and his solution is blunt: if the clans cannot settle their differences, Catlin MacRob and Laird Broden Shaw will be forced to marry.

Neither of them is pleased by the idea.

Catlin is headstrong, curious, and unwilling to accept that an arranged marriage is the only answer. A missing clanswoman sits at the center of the conflict, so Catlin decides the better plan is to find the truth herself. Broden has his own duty to his people, and he has no reason to trust a MacRob on Shaw land. Still, the two end up investigating the mystery together, even as their growing attraction makes the job harder.

The series uses a familiar romance setup, enemies from rival clans pushed into close quarters, but the clan dispute is more than scenery. Each couple has a personal love story, while the unanswered questions behind the feud continue from one book to the next. That makes the books work best in order.

The stakes are local and personal. A marriage can shift an alliance. A rumor can start a fight. A secret held by one family can endanger everyone living under its protection.

Emma Prince's contribution is Highland Feud, the opening novel. It sets the tone with suspicious neighbors, sharp dialogue, a determined heroine, and a laird who has to decide whether peace is worth trusting the woman his clan has been taught to see as an enemy. The series later follows other couples from the two clans as the larger mystery comes into clearer view.

Expect medieval Scottish settings, clan politics, forced-marriage pressure, and romances that grow while the characters are trying to prevent a worse outcome. The mood is adventurous rather than bleak, with enough mystery to keep the wider conflict moving alongside the love stories.

Start with Highland Feud. It introduces the feud, the political ultimatum, and the people most affected by both.
