Series background & context

The Night Prince books follow the story of Vlad Tepesh, a recurring powerhouse in the Night Huntress novels, when he moves from side character to leading man. Across four novels, readers see his world through the eyes of Leila Dalton, a human woman whose life changed after a freak electrical accident left her scarred and able to channel deadly power through her hands.

Leila makes her living on the carnival circuit, using her abilities as part of a daredevil act, but her gift comes with a cost. A single touch can flood her with visions of a person’s past, darkest secrets, and potential future, so she keeps everyone at arm’s length. When vampires kidnap her to use those powers against their enemies, she reaches out telepathically in desperation and connects with Vlad, the legendary vampire sometimes called the Impaler.

Vlad is centuries old, brutally efficient, and feared even by other vampires. He commands fire, reads minds, and rules his people with an iron hand. What he does not expect is to find a stubborn, wounded mortal who challenges him, calls out his worst instincts, and refuses to be treated like a pawn. Their alliance begins as a calculated move to flush out his enemies, then turns into an intense, slow trust as each tests how far they are willing to bend.

Over the series, the books dig into Vlad’s tangled history and the grudges that still hunt him, from rival vampires to necromancers who use forbidden magic. Leila faces her own evolution, struggling with trauma, loyalty to friends outside Vlad’s world, and what it means to tie her future to someone who can burn cities. The danger escalates with each book, shifting from assassination attempts and political schemes to curses that bind her life to someone else’s.

The tone blends high stakes action with a very character driven romance. Expect palace intrigues, torture chambers, sharp banter, and moments where Leila’s modern outlook slams up against Vlad’s medieval mindset. Familiar faces from the wider Night Huntress universe pop in and out, but the arc stands on its own, so you can follow Vlad and Leila without having every other book memorised.

If you like a series that starts with a single, world changing rescue and then keeps widening its scope, Night Prince delivers that climb. It is also where you see what happens when one of Frost’s most feared side characters finally lets someone get close enough to touch him, both literally and emotionally.
