Haunted Books in Order

The Haunted series starts like a classic haunted house story and then keeps widening until it becomes something much bigger. At the center is Sarah Pearson, a woman whose connection to the supernatural grows stronger with every book, whether she wants it to or not.

The opening run lays the groundwork. In Perron Manor, Sarah and her sister Chloe inherit a huge old house that seems too good to be true, and of course it is. Devil's Door then jumps back to 1982 to tell the story of the Blackwater Hotel massacre, showing how deeply the evil around the house runs. Purgatory returns to the present, bringing in investigators and church authority as the haunting becomes impossible to dismiss.

From there, the series opens outward. Sarah's world starts to include people like paranormal investigator David Ritter, Father Luca Janosch, and Reverend Rachel Quinn. The later books move from one notorious location to another, including a cathedral in Kutna Hora, South Hill Estate, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, an abandoned hotel, the Paris Catacombs, and finally the road to apocalypse in End of Days.

The walls keep opening outward.

That expansion is one of the big pleasures of the series. What begins as one house with one terrible secret slowly reveals a larger spiritual war, complete with occult history, trapped souls, possession, prophecy, and old forces that have been waiting a very long time. Mountford still gives each book its own main threat and setting, but there is a clear ongoing arc that rewards reading in order.

The locations matter here. Perron Manor is not just scary because it is old, it is scary because it feels layered with damage. The same goes for the cathedral, the asylum, the hotel, and the catacombs. These are places where history hangs in the air, and the series gets a lot of its atmosphere from characters being forced to walk into buildings that seem to remember every bad thing ever done inside them.

Even with the bigger mythology, Haunted stays readable because the stakes stay personal. Sarah is not a distant chosen one, she is someone trying to survive what keeps finding her. David, Rachel, and the others matter because they feel like people making hard choices under terrible pressure. If you want a series that starts with creaking floors and whispering rooms, then grows into a full supernatural saga, Haunted is where to start.
