Series background & context

This is less one continuing saga and more a shelf of standalone haunted-house stories, which is part of the fun. Each book drops a new set of people into an old property with a bad history and then lets the house start speaking, sometimes with footsteps and cold spots, sometimes with a full demand for justice.

Alexandria Clarke's entries tend to center on ordinary people who think they are dealing with real estate, grief, money troubles, or a fresh start. A married couple buys a bluff-top mansion. Newlyweds sink their savings into a lodge. A nanny takes a job in a strange estate. Siblings inherit a plantation. A writer heads to a retreat and finds something far older than writer's block waiting for her.

The recurring engine is simple: the dead are not finished, and the living cannot move on until somebody figures out why. That gives these books a nice balance between ghost story and mystery. You get spooky rooms, secret histories, and uneasy towns, but you also get clues, suspects, and a question that has to be answered.

Place matters a lot here. Clarke uses bluffs, snowed-in lodges, islands, plantations, and big decaying houses well. The setting is never just wallpaper. The buildings shape the pressure, limit escape routes, and hold the emotional weight of whatever happened before the story began.

These books are usually strongest when you want atmosphere without pages of gore. The tone is eerie, fast-moving, and very readable, with a lot of attention to relationships under stress. Most of the stories work on their own, so you can jump in almost anywhere, but readers who like haunted houses with a mystery backbone will probably want to read every Alexandria Clarke entry once they start.
