Dark Spirits Books in Order

Dark Spirits follows paranormal investigator Jodie Callaghan, and it feels like Mountford taking his haunted house instincts and giving them a single lead character to carry from book to book. These stories are ghostly on the surface, but they keep hinting that something older and stranger is moving underneath.

In The Watcher, Jodie returns to Parson Hall for one last investigation before the place is sold. She expects a difficult night. What she gets is far worse when a stranger's ritual wakes Nathaniel Barrow, the vengeful spirit known as the Watcher of Parson Hall. The setup gives the book a strong locked-in feel, with Jodie trapped in a house that is suddenly much more alive than it should be.

The Crone widens the scope. Jodie is drawn in by a secretive group that claims to know the truth about an ancient entity, and the series starts moving away from one haunted location toward a broader world of rituals, relics, and hidden knowledge. The threat is no longer just one spirit bound to one place. It is something that can reach farther than that.

Then The Demented pushes Jodie into Cainwood House, a long-abandoned asylum where she is meant to prove herself on her own. There she comes up against Edgar Sorrell, a dead inmate whose influence is still strong enough to break minds. It is a good example of how the series mixes investigation with pressure. Jodie is not just solving puzzles, she is being tested by them.

There are worse things than ghosts, and this series takes that line seriously.

What makes Dark Spirits work is Jodie herself. She is not a distant expert drifting through strange places untouched. The cases get personal, and the more she learns, the more she seems tied to a world she can no longer keep at arm's length. That gives the books a nice sense of momentum, because each one feels like it is changing what her life looks like.

If you like paranormal investigations, old houses, asylums, folklore, and a lead who is slowly being pulled into a larger occult struggle, this series delivers exactly that. It starts with a haunted hall, but it clearly has bigger designs in mind.
