Darkfall Books in Order

Darkfall is where Mountford leans hardest into dark fantasy without giving up horror. The series is set in Great Britain in 1880, a world that looks historical on the surface but is full of monsters, secret orders, ancient powers, and people trying to hold the darkness back before it swallows everything.

The main lead is Jack Bennett. In Deathborn, his life is shattered and he is pulled into the truth that creatures really do exist in the shadows. That brings him to the Deathborn, a hidden order committed to fighting the darkness, and into contact with the dangerous wytch Assandra. The first book does the important work of opening the world while still staying close to Jack's need for vengeance.

From there the map gets larger. Shadows of the Deep takes Jack to Whitby, where the Shadowhand, a network of spies, is investigating strange spawn creatures and an old threat beneath the sea. Crimson Dawn sends him to York after a terrible attack on a Deathborn chapter, where a new cult appears with plans big enough to threaten humanity itself.

The series keeps raising the stakes. In Orchard of Flesh, Jack heads to London to prove himself, only to find a nightmare growing under the city. Then Hexeater splits attention between Jack and Assandra, as a creature hunting the wytches of London brings one crisis while the dead rising in Durham brings another. By that point, the series has grown from one man's ruined life into a wide war against impossible evil.

This is the most overtly adventurous of Mountford's main series, but it still feels like horror first. The monsters are ugly, the settings are dangerous, and the secret history of the world keeps producing new reasons to worry. You get cults, ancient beings, magic, underground threats, and the constant sense that no victory will stay simple for long.

Jack gives the series its backbone, but he is not carrying it alone. Assandra matters more and more, the Shadowhand adds intrigue, and the larger conflict between hidden factions makes the world feel lived in. If you want a series with monster hunters, wytches, grim Victorian atmosphere, and a steady climb from personal revenge to end-of-the-world stakes, Darkfall is the one to pick.
