Extreme Horror Books in Order

The Extreme Horror books are Lee Mountford at his most brutal. These novels are separate stories, but they sit in the same loose fictional universe and share a taste for isolation, panic, and violence that keeps getting worse the longer the characters stay put.

Horror in the Woods opens with a simple survival setup. Four friends head out for a break in the countryside and end up deep in territory controlled by the Webb family, a clan of cannibals with a terrible history. It moves quickly and stays close to the fear of being hunted, with the woods turning from backdrop into trap.

Tormented changes the setting but not the pressure. Adrian James walks into Arlington Asylum looking for help and finds something much worse than neglect. The book leans into body horror, strange experiments, and the dread of being locked inside a place that has already stopped pretending it wants to save anyone.

Then The Netherwell Horror takes things to a strange coastal town. Beth Davis arrives in Netherwell Bay after a troubling message from her estranged brother and finds ritual killings, a cult, and the threat of a doorway to Hell opening for good. It has a little more mystery in its setup, but it still builds toward the same kind of nasty, no-safe-way-out tension.

These books do not ease you in.

What connects them is the feeling that the world has already gone rotten before the story even begins. Mountford likes trapped characters, bad choices made under pressure, and settings that seem to carry their own sickness. He also likes escalation. A bad weekend becomes a massacre. A treatment becomes a nightmare. A missing person case becomes the possible end of everything.

Even though the books share a universe, you do not need to read them in sequence to follow what is happening. They work best as individual shocks, each with its own cast and location. If you want splatter, cults, monsters, and stories that push well past polite horror, this is the series for that side of Mountford's work.
