Author bio
Cube Kid is the pen name of Erik Gunnar Taylor, a writer from Alaska who turned his Minecraft obsession into a full-time job. His books grow out of the same blocky world many kids play in, but treat it like a place where real stories and friendships can unfold.
He grew up in a place where long winters left plenty of time for games, reading, and tinkering with stories. As a kid he wrote fanfiction for the worlds he loved, long before he imagined doing it for a living.
Minecraft hit him at exactly the right moment. The open, rules-based world felt like the perfect sandbox for adventure stories, so he started posting short pieces online and sharing them with friends.
The Diary of a Minecraft Villager was the real turning point. He self-published the ebook in February 2015, expecting a tiny audience, and instead found a huge community of young Minecraft players who wanted to read about someone like themselves inside the game.
That small ebook was soon picked up by a French publisher, translated, and released in print as Le Journal d’un Noob with new art by illustrator Saboten. From there the project grew into the Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior novels, graphic novels, and spin-off series that now reach readers in many languages.
At the center of most of his books is Runt, a twelve-year-old villager who would rather swing a sword than sell carrots. Through Runt’s diary, Cube Kid mixes school drama, big boss fights, and the kind of jokes and frustrations that feel familiar to a lot of middle-grade readers.
He doesn’t stay in one corner of Minecraftia, though. Eeebs the kitten in Tales of an 8-Bit Kitten, Pebble’s lonely journey in Path of Exile, and the graphic-novel adventures in A Noob’s Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior all explore different parts of the same world from new angles.
Outside the Minecraft universe, he’s slowly building a young adult science-fiction series set inside a competitive virtual-reality arena. It’s a long-term project he chips away at between trips back to Villagetown, the Nether, and Aetheria.
Away from the keyboard he keeps things pretty simple. He likes to travel when he can, fix his own car, and read the same kind of fanfiction that first got him writing.
He also spends time chatting with readers, answering questions, and sometimes folding fan-made characters into new stories. For many kids who would rather be playing than reading, his books are the bridge between the two.
