Path of Exile

by Cube Kid

2016

Pebble once seemed destined to become Villagetown’s greatest warrior, until one terrible choice got him banished beyond the wall. Alone in the wilderness, he fights to survive monster-filled nights and decide whether he deserves the second chance a dying stranger offers.

Series background & context

Path of Exile is a darker, more focused side story set in the same world as Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior. Instead of following Runt, it centers on Pebble, the gifted but hot-headed student whose choices nearly cost Villagetown its wall.

In the main series, Pebble’s prank with TNT explodes into disaster and he’s banished from the village. Path of Exile picks up after that moment, with Pebble thrown out beyond the safety of the walls and forced to survive on his own. The comfortable routines of school disappear overnight; now every sunset means another night of monsters, and even simple things like food, light, and shelter have to be fought for.

The book leans into survival. Pebble scavenges ruined camps, abandoned chests, and the remains of less lucky explorers scattered through the wilderness. He has to learn to read the terrain, manage his resources, and pick his battles, all while dealing with the guilt and anger that come from knowing his banishment was his own fault.

Alone with his thoughts, Pebble is a very different narrator from Runt. He’s sharper, more cynical, and painfully aware of how easily things can go wrong. Scenes of him huddling through storms or fleeing through the night are as much about what’s going on in his head as they are about zombies and skeletons.

Everything changes when he stumbles across a dying stranger whose final words point to a threat bigger than one disgraced student. That last request gives Pebble a reason to keep moving and hints at connections to Herobrine, the Eyeless One, and the wider battles playing out across Minecraftia.

Stylistically it’s still recognizably a Cube Kid book—short chapters, game mechanics woven into the action, and moments of humor—but the tone is more intense and introspective. Readers who have wondered what became of Pebble after Path of the Diamond finally get to see his side of the story, and to watch him fight not just mobs, but his own past.

For most fans, Path of Exile works best after the early Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior novels, once you know who Pebble was before exile. Read that way, it feels like a companion piece that fills in one of the series’ biggest loose ends.
