Series background & context
The Bewitching Midlife Crisis Mystery books follow Evanora Dark, a witch over fifty whose life has been completely rerouted by illness, loss, and a very unwanted new ability. After a stroke, a heart attack, and bypass surgery derail everything, she goes back to her hometown of Buttermilk Bay, Massachusetts, and starts over as a house stager.
That restart is the emotional center of the series. Evanora is not beginning from a place of youthful optimism. She is sore, skeptical, and trying to make peace with the fact that life yanked the wheel hard. Then the ghosts show up. Not just any ghosts, either. Murdered ghosts who want her help.
That gives the books a fun working structure. Evanora is trying to run her staging business, keep up with her best friend Fab, deal with family magic, and maybe let a silver-fox contractor a little too close, all while dead people keep demanding justice. The setup is inherently comic, but there is real feeling underneath it.
The Massachusetts setting matters, too. Buttermilk Bay sits close enough to Salem in the series imagination to let Cassidy play with witchy expectations while keeping the town its own thing. This is less gothic gloom and more lived-in New England weirdness, with real-estate work, local grudges, and supernatural trouble constantly stepping on one another.
What makes these books stand out in Cassidy's catalog is the age and attitude of the lead. Evanora has no interest in pretending she is endlessly patient or effortlessly glamorous. She is tired, funny, sharp, and willing to push back. That gives the whole series a welcome midlife bite.
If you want paranormal mystery with more grown-up life chaos in the mix, this is a strong place to start. The books blend ghosts, murder, recovery, friendship, and romance without losing their sense of fun.
